One Week Itinerary
in Red Lodge
                                 

Day One: Arrive Billing's Airport

  • Drive to Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument (Custer's Last Stand); 65 miles east on I 90, 1 hour 10 minutes; after touring Monument, drive to the Irish Rose B&B in  Red Lodge; 76 miles west on I 90 to exit 434, then South 44 miles to Red Lodge. If you skip the Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument, the Irish Rose B&B is 62 miles from the Billings airport. Following check-in, stroll Red Lodge's main street, dine at one of many fine restaurants, take in live music at several Red Lodge venues (typically Thursday – Sunday evenings in summer).

Days Two-Seven: Explore the Area
  •  Explore Red Lodge: Visit art galleries, tour the Historical Society Museum, check out the unique shops; take a break at the Coffee Roasters, the Pearl Tea Shop or Honeys; Tour the beautiful gardens and view wildlife at the Yellowstone Wildlife Sanctuary; take a leisurely hike along the West Fork of Rock Creek (Silver Run Loop Trail System).

  • Day Trip: Drive the Beartooth All American Road and Chief Joseph Scenic Byway Loop (134 miles RT); enjoy the most scenic and exciting drive in the lower 48; take time for a hike on the Beartooth High Lakes Trail (trailhead at Island Lake Campground 37.6 miles from Red Lodge); detour to explore Cook City and Silver Gate, MT; the Log Cabin Cafe in Silver Gate is a recommended meal stop.

  • Participate in the activities of one of many Red Lodge summer event weekends.

  • Horseback riding: Local guides and outfitters offer a variety of rides, from a couple of hours to day-long trips.

  • Fly Fishing: Fantastic fishing opportunities abound in and near Red Lodge; contact the Trout Scout for a fishing guide.

  • River rafting: Book a raft trip on the Stillwater River.

  • Long Day Trip: Drive the Beartooth All American Road to the NE Entrance of Yellowstone National Park "YNP"; then, drive the east side of the YNP (NE Entrance to Tower-Roosevelt Junction, south to Canyon Village and Fishing Bridge, then to the East Entrance of YNP, to Cody, WY, and return to Red Lodge [276 miles RT]. Enjoy wildlife viewing, the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone, Yellowstone Lake and much much more. Have a late dinner in Cody followed by a 1 hour drive on good State Highway to Red Lodge.

  • Leisure time in Red Lodge: Enjoy the community swimming pool and tennis courts; play the 18 hole golf course; take a hike in and close to Red Lodge starting at one or more of a dozen City and Forest Service trailheads with access to over 100 miles of Beartooth Mountain hiking adventure.

  • Tippet Rise Art Center: Drive 43 miles to this ideal Art Center that blends art, classical music, larger than life sculptures with spectacular landscapes. Advance reservations are suggested for tours and specifically for the concerts.

Day eight:
  • Following a gourmet breakfast at the Irish Rose, drive to the Billing's Airport for your mid-day flight home.
